Perhaps two of the most fundamental questions that pertain to this area of interest are: Why study (or follow) the Mayan Calendar? What does it have to do with me?   Although answers could focus on things such as the intrigue of learning about the "grand mysteries" of the cosmos that are imbedded in the workings of the calendrical cycles, or the intrigue of Mayan observations of solar, lunar, and planetary cycles and related timekeeping practices, what is particularly compelling is the Mayan Long Count which indicates that the conclusion of a Great Cycle of 5200 Long Count years coincides with the end of the Gregorian year 2012. 

It is evident that the Maya felt that it was important to track and record large cycles of time, cycles that extend over many thousands of years. Since such conceptions of time are far removed those in use within contemporary societies this ancient wisdom entreats us to wonder and speculate on how this knowledge came into being and what the implications might be for the current age.  On a more personal level this information can also help individuals to acquire considerable insight into "who they are", "why they are here", and "what  their life purpose might be".
