"The beauty of the sculpture, the solemn
stillness of the woods,
the desolation of the city, and the mystery
that hung over it....."
These
words, written by John Lloyd Stephens as he described the awe he felt in
gazing
upon the ruins of the ancient city of
Copan in 1839, still reach across time and entreat us to explore, to adventure,
and to speculate. It was the beginning
of a new era of discovery and since that time an astonishing amount of progress
has been made in unravelling the
long-hidden secrets of the world of the ancient Maya. Adventurers,
archaeologists, epigraphers, historians, visionaries, and many others have felt
the call of the ageless wisdom locked
inside the magnificent hieroglyphic depictions that can be found in stone, on
ceramics, and on the pages of ancient
codices. As the journey of discovery continues many questions arise: Who were
the ancient Maya? Who are the present
day Maya - and what knowledge has been passed down to them? What do the
hieroglyphic inscriptions tell us?
Who is interpreting the inscriptions, and on what criteria? What meanings can be
found to help us in this present age?
MAYAWORKS
provides an avenue for helping people to explore these type of questions. It is
our mission to go beyond "newly
created" mythologies and "fads" and tap into more authentic forms
of inquiry and wisdom. Our educational
programs bring into focus many aspects of the discoveries that have been made
during the past few decades, with emphasis on discoveries associated with
calendrical systems and the meanings of hieroglyphic symbol
systems associated with them. Our art works are designed to foster reflection
and contemplation of deeper meanings
associated with these ancient ideas.
